USAGE AUDIT for heating

This page is a quick guide to see how the cost of heating your home measures-up.  A more detailed examination can be found on the GREEN HOME RATING TOOL tab.

Please note: this tool has been designed for the Delaware valley where fuel costs are similar.

USAGE    -   Total cost of heating for one winter
Add up all your heating bills or receipts
AREA       -   Total square footage of heated house
If you're unsure how big your home is, check on
your deed or settlement sheet, measure it, or
log onto zillow.com and type in your address.

Divide the:  USAGE by the AREA = $per square foot
                         LOW USAGE          =   $.00 - .40 per s.f.
                         MEDIUM USAGE    =   $.40 - .80 per s.f.
                         HIGH USAGE         =   $.80 + per s.f.

(Double these numbers if you heat with propane)

OK, now you have a rough idea how your utility usage for heating stacks-up.  Clearly, the higher your usage, the higher the opportunity you have for savings.  Typical savings range from 20% to 30% with additional savings on summer cooling.
Treatments like air sealing, insulation and duct sealing have benefits in both the winter and summer.

If you live in a green home, please e-mail (hap@usgreenhome.com) me a description and photos similar to the SAMPLE HOME tab.  Over the last 20 years I've made one decision after another to save energy, use less and recycle everything. Today I live in what many people call "Philadelphia's Green Home."  The work wasn't difficult and as a benefit, I now heat my home for approximately $.27  per square foot.  Most of my customers in the Delaware Valley spend between $.65 to $1.50 per square foot to heat their homes.   My goal is to live the "American Dream"  without killing that dream for future generations.
